MDSSAR Color Guard goes South
Members of The Maryland Color Guard went south this weekend (14 March 2009) to participate in the Monument Dedication for Americas first Soldier. The ceremony was held at the new Infantry Museum in Columbus Georgia on Friday March 13, 2009. The monument was a gift to the Museum by the Coweta Falls Chapter of the Georgia Society. The event went extremely well and without hitch.
A small exception was that the Museum had posted the Maryland state flag upside down on their walk of honor which had to be corrected before the ceremony. MDSSAR Color Guard came prepared with the correctly displayed MD flag with its cross botany on its flagstaff as required by a 1945 Maryland law.
Maryland SAR contributed towards this monument along with several other of the original 13 colonies.
The Maryland men making the long trek to Georgia were David Hoover, Lou Raborg and Bill Smithson. We thank these men for taking of their person time and resources to do Maryland proud.
As compatriot Bob Galer of the Coweta Falls Chapter, Georgia Society states:
First, the MDSSAR should not only be proud that they joined the combined Color Guards of the Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee Societies, as well as the award-acclaimed Georgia Color Guard, but the model for the Continental figure on the front face of the monument (the back is a militia figure) was a Private from one of the Marland regiments in the American Revolution.
It should be stated that this was the first monument among many that may be erected on the 200 acre campus of the new Army Museum in Columbus, GA. Also, it was a pre-launch event as the planned formal opening of the new National Infantry Museum itself is in June, 2009.
