John Hanson Awards Essay Contest Winner

The John Hanson Chapter of the Maryland SAR held its winter meeting Tuesday March 17, 2009 at Mama Stella's Restaurant in Clinton Maryland to honor the Chapter winner of the Essay Contest(George S and Stella M Knight). The winner was Laura Carts, Grade 11, Accokeek MD 20607. Her topic, which she read as part of the evenings program was entitled "The First Amendment to the Constitution of the USA: Protecting the Right to Free Speech". In accordance with the contest rules she was presented with a certificate and a savings bond and the essay was forwarded to the State society for consideration in the State competition
 
Doug Stuart Chapter president gave a report on the chapter activities including a report by George Satterthwaite on the chapter's activities in the Nationwide Wreaths Across America  program last December 13 where the chapter laid commemorative wreaths at exactly noon  at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham MD in commoration of those who have given their lives in the service of their country. The chapter has already signed up to organize this event on Dec 12, 2009. Participants from a local cub scout pack and NROTC unit helped in laying the seven commemorative wreaths, honoring the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard,US Merchant Marine and POW/MIAs..
 
The President of the Maryland State Society of SAR,Duane Tackitt attended the chapter  meeting along with Miss Carts' parents, the John Hanson chapter president Doug Stuart and five chapter members.
