MDSSAR Color Guard Opens the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition (APhA2010)

American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition (APhA2010) was held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, March 12-15. Thousands of the nation's leading pharmacists assembled at APhA2010 to shape the future of pharmacy, enhance their professional knowledge, view the latest products and services, and network with their peers. The Maryland Society Color Guard helped to begin the meeting by presenting the colors at the Opening General Session on Saturday, March 13th. With an excess of 3,000 pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and industry partners on attendance at the session, the color guard “did us proud in spreading the message of the Sons of the American Revolution” according to one of the meeting coordinators and past president of the MDSSAR, CAPT R.D. Tackitt, USN (Ret).
MDSSAR Participates in Wreaths Across America for the Second Year
21 December, 2009 - 03:00 — webmasterDecember 12th 2009 was a day for remembrance. Wreaths Around America program honors our fallen service men and women. A wreath is place for each service branch, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Cost Guard, Merchant Marines and one for those Missing In Action. The MDSSAR Color Guard and MDSSAR members participated at three locations this year, Annapolis National Cemetery, Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery and two wreath laying ceremonies in Bel Air Maryland.
Members of the John Paul Jones chapter represented the MDSSAR at the Annapolis National Cemetery ceremony. Hundreds of local citizens, veterans, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol units, and military groups were in attendance. There was over 800 wreaths placed at row after row of tombstones for the veterans interred at this cemetery beginning with the Civil War and up to today.Fund Raising Note Cards Get Off To A Great Start

21 Nov 2009 at the Col. Aquila Hall annual dinner the young artist that draw the note cards was honored. Charissa Williams a home schooled senior took on the challenge. Her original pen and ink drawing have been turned into the first set of Maryland theme Revolutionary War note cards. She was presented a certificate of appreciation and a check for $100.00 to help her in her art studies.

These cards will be available to all MDSSAR chapters as a fund raising project for them.

Maryland Society welcomes it's newest member Governor Martin O'Malley
23 November, 2009 - 12:54 — webmasterMaryland Society welcomes it's newest member, Governor Martin O'Malley.
State President David Hoover inducted the Governor into the Society at the Maryland State House in Annapolis. During the ceremony, 3rd VP Lou Raborg presented the Governor with his SAR member rosette.
The Governor was very cordial welcoming all members and thanked State Genealogist Chris Smithson for all the work he had done in getting the Governor's application approved.
Summary of the Business session from the 119th Annual Congress
15 July, 2009 - 17:34 — webmasterThe 119th Annual Congress for the NSSAR is complete. This years conference was held in Atlanta, GA at the start of July. NSSAR Executive Joe Harris, provided the following summary of the business session.
The business session of the 119th Congress concluded with the following decisions:
* Changes to the NSSAR Bylaws:Proposals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 14 - PASSEDProposals 7, 10 - PASSED as amendedProposal 12 - FAILED*National dues will increase from $25 to $30 effective January 1, 2010 for Regular Members.
*National dues will increase from $5 to $10 effective January 1, 2010 for Junior Members.
*New Membership Application (processing) fee will increase from $60 to $80 effective January 1, 2010.
Executive Committee issues were numerous but of those discussed, the following were particularly important to the general membership:

The Col. John Eager Howard Chapter MDSSAR held its Annual ceremony on June 7th honoring Col. John E. Howard, Signer Samuel Chase, Private Daniel Bowley, and Lt. Griffith Evans. Members of the Maryland Color Guard participated in this Annual Old St. Paul's Cemetery Memorial to these 4 Patriots buried in the historic cemetery. The event focuses on the more famous Col. Howard who was a friend of Washington, active political figure in Maryland, Chapter namesake, and who has multiple streets named in his honor in Baltimore and the great Signer of the Declaration of Independence and former Justice Samuel Chase. In addition, two lesser known military men are also honored showing the wide range of citizens that helped this great nation during the Revolution. From the Privates to the Colonels, from the common man to the lofty politicians, all contributed to the founding of our nation.Westminster Chapter SAR Holds First Grave Marking

On Saturday, 16 May 2009, the Westminster Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), honored the sacrifices of Pvt. James Crawford, a patriot of the American Revolution, by marking his grave in St. Luke’s (Winters) Cemetery, New Windsor, Maryland. This was the first Grave Marking performed by the Westminster Chapter in its twenty-four year history. While weather reports threatened rain for the day, the ceremony itself was graced with sun and cool temperatures. Attendance was light, but included members of the chapter, representatives of the William Winchester Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, members of St. Luke’s church and the state Color Guard of the Maryland Society, SAR. Chapter vice president James F. Engler, Sr. served as master of ceremonies.
2009 MDSSAR Yearbook now Available

The 2009 MDSSAR Yearbook is now online. You can download it by clicking on the picture to the right for the next month or so, and then it will be available in the MDSSAR Archives. The pdf file is a large file, around 10M, so be prepared for a longer download. The 2009 Yearbook is 122 pages, and edited by Rev. Christos Christou, Jr.. It includes all of the BOM meeting minutes, and Year-end reports for the various committee's. One of the benefits of getting the MDSSAR yearbook online is that you are able to see it color. The printed version is not printed in color due to cost, but you can see the yearbook in full color by downloading it online. In addition it has the 2009 MDSSAR Calendar in it as well. This is a valuable resource, and everyone should take a few minutes to browse through its contents.
2009 Washington DC Memorial Day Parade

The MDSSAR Color Guard participated again this year in the Memorial Day Parade in the nation's capital representing the National Society. Our color guard has been in the parade every year since its reintroduction to Washington in 2004. Part of the parade is laid out in historical order. This has always put us near the beginning. MDSSAR Well represented in latest SAR Magazine (Spring 2009)
3 June, 2009 - 10:11 — webmasterMDSSAR members should be proud, as we had a Strong showing in the most recent edition of The SAR Magazine, Spring 2009 (Vol. 103, No. 4). The SAR Magazine, is the Official Magazine of the NSSAR and is delivered quarterly. This past issue was a great issue, well out together, and had some interesting articles. In addition to the articles be great, the MDSSAR was very well represented in this issue, with MDSSAR members on several pages. According to the most recent numbers (published in this edition of The SAR Magazine, the MDSSAR is the 10th largest State society. By looking at the most recent magazine issue, you might think that we were one of the Biggest State societies.
