Background
John Ross Key was born in Cecil County, MD son of Francis and Arnold (Ross) Key on 19 September 1754. He married Anne Phoebe Penn Dagwood Charlton on 19 October 1775. They had children, one of whom was Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner.
AT the beginning of the War of the American Revolution, Key was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 20 June 1775, in one of the two Rifle Companies authorized by the Continental Congress from Maryland. He was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1776.
